President Duterte issued Proclamation No. 216 on May 23, 2017, declaring martial law and suspending the writ of habeas corpus in the whole of Mindanao following the Maute Group siege of Marawi City. The martial law was initially for 60 days but was extended by Congress until December 31, 2019. The Battle of Marawi lasted five months and resulted in the liberation of the city.
